SMFC Membership Information

SMFC strives for high musical standards and has ambitious production goals. New members are accepted through auditions which are held twice a year. The SMFC adheres to the following practices and guidelines to ensure that all rehearsals are productive and rewarding to our members and that our artistic goals are achieved.

Commitment:
Participation in SMFC requires a substantial commitment from each member in order to achieve musical goals and a high level of performance. Practice at home and regular attendance at all regular, extra and sectional rehearsals is expected from all members to achieve these goals.

Musical Expectations:
Each member is required to learn all musical selections, including correct pitches, lyrics, and dynamics. Music should be learned accurately as early as possible so that the Director can work on dynamics and musical interpretation. Members who are not musically prepared may be excluded from performances.

Auditions:
Twice annually, new member candidates are invited to attend Open Rehearsals to preview our music and to learn more about becoming a member of SMFC. Open Rehearsals are held during the first two weeks of our spring and fall seasons. Auditions take place on each evening immediately following rehearsal. Please visit our Upcoming Events page for more information about our next Open Rehearsal.

Attendance:
Members may miss no more than three rehearsals per season. If you must miss a rehearsal for any reason, please notify the Director or your Section Leader as soon as possible. If you have missed a rehearsal, please see your section leader to obtain directorial notes on material worked on in your absence. Also, it is your responsibility to learn any material covered as soon as possible so as not to disrupt others in your section by singing incorrect notes.

Rehearsals:
Rehearsals are held Monday evenings from 7:00-9:00pm. Additional sectional and other rehearsals may be scheduled. Rehearsals are for learning and polishing music and for conducting other SMFC business. Much effort is made to make rehearsals fun and rewarding for all members. Excessive talking and other disruptive behavior during rehearsal is rude and rewarding to no one and will not be tolerated.

Extra Engagements:
SMFC actively pursues exciting performance opportunities and may schedule one to three extra engagements each season. All members are expected to participate in extra engagements unless informed that participation is optional. Please report unavoidable conflicts to Director or your Section Leader as soon as possible.

Dues:
Dues are $35 per season and are due by the third rehearsal of the season. Please make check payable to SMFC and submit to Treasurer Linda Franz or your Section Leader. Members with dues outstanding may be excluded from performances.

Sheet Music:
All sheet music required for participation in SMFC will be assigned to you through our Music Librarian, Sandy Sprague. All sheet music remains the property of SMFC and is to be returned in usable condition at the end of the concert season. Marking directorial notes in your music is strongly encouraged, however please do so only in pencil.

Section Leaders:
Each vocal section is assigned one or more Section Leaders to monitor attendance and sectional progress and to carry out other duties as assigned by the Directors. Section Leaders may answer questions regarding all musical or organizational concerns and may be asked to speak to members on matters of attendance, policy and musical issues. Please address Section Leaders with courtesy at all times. Rude behavior toward Section Leaders will not be tolerated and may result in dismissal.

Wardrobe Requirements:
How we look on stage is just as important as how we sound. Men wear black tuxedos and women wear full-length black skirts and black beaded tops, which are to be purchased or rented through the chorus.

Women:
The cost for a full-length skirt is $42; a blouse can be purchased for $66 or rented for $20. If purchasing both items, the total cost is $108 and may be paid in four installments of $27 per month. If renting the blouse, the total cost is $62, which may be paid in two installments of $31 per month. Rented blouses remain property of SMFC and may not be altered and must be returned clean and in useable condition. A small supply of “previously worn” items is available for purchase at a discount.

Men:
The cost to purchase a tuxedo jacket is $50, rental is $20. Men must also purchase their own black dress or tuxedo pants and white tuxedo shirt, either through our tuxedo supplier or another source. Payment plans can be arranged. Details regarding tuxedo purchase or rental will be provided.
